FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ):
About the style
1. Is Choy Lai Fut considered a "traditional" style? What does that mean?
We cannot speak for everyone in the Choy Lai Fut system as there are countless teachers and students
worldwide, but within the bounds of our own school we try to adhere to our traditions and customs
as much as possible. This is because we respect our roots, beginning with the founder himself and his
teachers, and want to maintain what has been passed down to us so that we can continue our particular
lineage. There are differing opinions out there as to what is considered traditional, but we're not
too concerned with classifications like that -- we're just happy to practice what we've learned, and
teach it back out to our students in the original format that was given to us. And we respect all other
practitioners who would do the same for their respective systems.
2. Is Choy Lai Fut a hard or soft style?
Actually, we're both. We combine soft AND hard techniques into a unique repertoire of techniques --
the most successful students of Choy Lai Fut have the ability to use both "hard" and "soft" power in
everything they do.
3. Can I jump directly into your sparring program?
Good question. The answer is no. You can learn how to brawl street-style just by picking fights with
people (which we highly discourage!), but that's not what we're about. We teach students that are
genuinely interested in studying Choy Lai Fut in earnest, and applying techniques and principles
CONSISTENT WITH OUR STYLE. So we require that students participate for at least several months in our
traditional program first to learn the basic footwork, stances, and punches of our style before we
will allow them into the sparring program. To us, Choy Lai Fut is an art, and a serious study of
body mechanics and physics. And we want our students to think of it that way, too.
