FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ): Self defence vs. traditional program THE QUESTION: Would the traditional program have the same benefits as taking the women's self defence? OUR RESPONSE: The traditional program is actually quite different from the women's self defence program because we teach so much more in the traditional -- it is a good workout with a combination of group exercises, strengthening leg exercises, and traditional forms (hand forms and many weapon forms), plus we also do partner work so that you can learn how to apply the techniques. It is a co-ed class so if you are interested in working with both men and women (the guys here are actually very respectful of the women), and you would like to explore your own potential in terms of physical ability and technique, then I would recommend this program. This one is ongoing, and students start whenever they like -- they also come at different times, so you work at your own pace with the forms to learn new techniques. I would say that in each class there is always a time for review, plus there is always time for something new to be learned. The women's self defence program is strictly geared toward women who want to learn some very basic moves to protect themselves, but the idea there is that you want to just do enough to get away from an attacker -- we do not want women to stay and fight. It is an 8 week program only that also goes into the psychological aspects of self protection, and is done only with other women in the class so it is a good environment to learn if self defence is your first priority. Some of our female students in the traditional program like to also take the self defence course (we give them a discount if they do), and they usually start at a much higher confidence level than normal. We also have a student in the traditional that first started out with the self defence. Upon request, we can give you the contact information for some of the women that have previously taken both or either program, and they can give you their honest assessment of each. The schedule for the traditional program doesn't usually change, and is the same as on the website. The self defence program may be slightly different depending on the students coming per intake (we try to run it at the most convenient time for everyone), but usually it is on Saturday afternoons.
